Strong Characters Chapter 1 is where our series celebrating the people who shaped Laphroaig began.

Chapter 1 tells the story of Donald Johnston, the elder of two brothers who founded the Laphroaig distillery in 1815 and helped create the iconic Laphroaig whisky we know today. Their bold venture is brought to life through illustrations by award-winning British artist Bill Bragg, which feature across the packaging and accompanying booklet.

Such a remarkable story deserves an extraordinary whisky. The one chosen for Chapter 1 rested in our warehouses for 33 years, waiting for the perfect moment to be bottled. Matured in a selection of American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak sherry-seasoned hogsheads, it was bottled at a fixed strength to preserve its optimum character.

The result is a whisky of remarkable complexity, bringing together notes of sweet desserts, gentle sherry and savoury peat smoke in perfect harmony.

Each bottle comes with a complimentary Bill Bragg print, created to celebrate the people, history and character behind the first chapter of the Strong Characters series.
