Frequently Asked Questions
Laphroaig Islay Ember is a single cask whisky matured for over a decade entirely in one Amontillado sherry cask. Filled in April 2014, the whisky remained in that same cask throughout its maturation rather than being transferred there for a shorter sherry finish.
That single cask produced just 312 bottles, with notes of walnut, maple syrup and salted caramel alongside Laphroaig’s distinctive salt and velvety peat smoke. Because every bottle comes from that one individual cask, once those 312 bottles are gone, this particular expression cannot be recreated.
Created together with our Friends of Laphroaig, Islay Ember is a truly one-off limited edition whisky, shaped by a single cask from start to finish and never to be repeated.
312 bottles, and not one more.
We did not decide that number, the cask did. A vintage from April 2014, left alone for over ten years, and what remained when we came to empty it was 312. No blending to round it up, no water to stretch it further. Every Laphroaig single cask works this way, and this one gave what it gave.
We have been at it since 1815, doing the right thing rather than the easy one. That is our scotch whisky heritage , and 312 bottles of it went out into the world.
One Amontillado sherry cask, filled in April 2014, then ten years of waiting. We could have finished Islay Ember Laphroaig in sherry for a few months at the end and called it done, but that is not how we make whisky . The right way, not the easy way. A decade in dry Amontillado gives walnuts, almonds and maple syrup where a sweeter cask would give dried fruit, and our peat smoke runs velvety through all of it. Salt and smoke with a surprising sweetness, unmistakable, and gone in 312 bottles.
Glowing deep gold in the glass, and sweet right from the beginning. Toasted walnuts, maple syrup, and cooked pancakes on the nose; followed by spices like cinnamon and cloves on the palate together with salted caramel and almonds. The dry Amontillado cask gives the nutty flavours that would have been dried fruits otherwise. Under all of it runs the peat we burn ourselves at our whisky distillery, velvety here rather than fierce, with the salt of Islay in the background. The finish is sweet, spiced and mouth coating
Sold out, and there is nothing behind it. A single cask scotch comes from one barrel and one only, so when the last of the 312 bottles went, that was Islay Ember done.
