For Strong Characters Chapter 1, we partnered with him to bring the story of Donald Johnston to life through illustrations that feature across the packaging, accompanying booklet and print included with each bottle.
The artwork tells the story of Donald Johnston, one of Laphroaig’s founders and the Strong Character at the heart of Chapter 1. Created by British illustrator Bill Bragg, it brings Laphroaig’s history to life, capturing the people, place and character behind our beginnings.
Laphroaig 33 Year Old Strong Characters Chapter 1 honours Donald Johnston, who co-founded Laphroaig with his brother Alexander in 1815. His pioneering spirit helped shape the distillery and the distinctive character of Laphroaig. Chapter 1 celebrates his story and the legacy he left behind.

Laphroaig Strong Characters Chapter 1 is a rare 33 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky. It was matured in a selection of American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak sherry-seasoned hogsheads, developing layers of sweetness, gentle sherry and savoury peat smoke over more than three decades.
Strong Characters Chapter 2 continues the series with Dugald Johnston, son of Laphroaig co-founder Donald Johnston. Honouring the legacy he carried forward, Chapter 2 is a rare 35 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky and the second release in the Strong Characters series.
