Distillers One of One

A One of a Kind Auction

Distillers One of One is a prestigious auction for unique whiskies that have been created bespoke for the occasion. And when we say bespoke, we mean it: each bottle contributed by all the distillers is a complete one-off, never to be repeated.

Once every other year, a significant portion of the auction’s funds is allocated to the vital work of charities, such as The Distillers Charity’s Youth Action Fund, which aims to transform the lives of young people in Scotland. It’s a blueprint for the future of whisky making that brings the entire Scotch Whisky industry together. For every auction, distilleries push the boundaries of our field to raise funds and create a truly special whisky for the aficionado who will go on to cherish it.

Laphroaig Capsule

Aged 40 Years

With the auction playing host to some of the rarest and most high-end single malts in the world, rounds of bidding are lively and energetic as passionate connoisseurs bid to attain one-of-a-kind whiskies. It’s always hugely exciting, as bidders who’ve set their hearts on a single malt vie to secure their chosen spirit.

Distilleries from across the length and breadth of Scotland take part in the event, which takes place in the elegant grandeur of Hopetoun House near Edinburgh, in partnership with the world-famous Sotheby’s auction house. Its impact has been remarkable, attracting more than a fifth of the funds raised in the auctions by contributing exquisite spirits such as our Islay neighbours Bowmore’s Onyx release.

This year, we are rising to the occasion by providing a bespoke lot of our own, an astonishing new creation that captures the essence of our spirit: Laphroaig Capsule.

A bold decanter design

Housed in a bold decanter design that greets the eye with striking clarity, this is a 40-Year-Old single malt that captures our bold character. It tells the story of what makes our distillery and our whiskies unmistakable, celebrating what makes us unique while embodying a crucial chapter of our distillery history.

This spirit was distilled at the start of the 1980s at a time of turbulence for the industry, and we slowed production right down to pave the way for major renovations. Under the watchful eye of then-Distillery Manager Murdo Reed, we weathered the storm – and set course for the future.

The last remaining whiskies that had been condensed in the open air

A new stillhouse was built in 1982, allowing us to refine our process in a way that would minimise the disruption to production, which ultimately meant bringing our existing stills and condensers inside for the first time. It was a worthwhile change, but we save a little soft spot for whiskies made before then, too. Spirit distilled in 1980 and 1981 is among the last remaining whiskies that had been condensed in the open air, in the midst of the Hebridean weather, just like Laphroaig had been since the distillery was first up and running.

Laphroaig Capsule 40-Year-Old is one of them, having been made before the new stillhouse was installed. Matured in oloroso sherry seasoned hogsheads and ex-bourbon American oak hogsheads for around a quarter of a century before being brought together in hogsheads until June 2022. It captures that moment in time, and – by using the open-air techniques used up to the early ’80s – it speaks to the history that preceded it, too.

An auction for the ages

On 10th October, 2025, this special one-off release will be auctioned at the historic auction houses of Sotheby’s. We’ve mustered the full force of our ingenuity and creativity to craft something truly different for this, and we’re so excited to reveal the remarkable whisky, its bold decanter design, and most of all, for all the good it can create in the future.
