How cask shapes our Islay whiskies

Every bottle here carries our coast. At our Islay distillery, barley is steeped in Kilbride Stream water, turned on traditional malting floors and seasoned by Atlantic air before it’s peat-smoked low and cool so flavour—not heat—does the work. We run an unhurried whisky-making process for clarity, then fill to oak on the shoreline. The result in the glass is unmistakably Laphroaig: peat first, malt in support, with a disciplined, coastal line running through the whisky.

From there, wood sets the scene without stealing it. Ex-bourbon American oak often lifts vanilla and coconut while keeping the distillery character clean; sherry-seasoned casks add warmth and spice over the maritime core; smaller-format casks (such as quarter casks) draw the smoke close and deepen texture; refill casks give length and composure. That’s why our whiskies show different angles of the same shore—whether you choose something bright and precise, richer and spiced, or long and composed, the island stays in charge.
