We're a small, tight knit team here at Laphroaig. Most of us are born and bred islanders.
Many of us have worked here for the best part of our adult lives. Our new Distillery Manager, Barry MacAffer, even grew up on the distillery grounds. We take great pride in the fact that we're the current stewards of a 200-year-old story, and we’re equally proud to know that this distillery, and the whisky it makes, is the centre of a global community of friends.
Here’s to Laphroaig, and here’s to another 200 years of friendship. Long may it all continue.
Barry MacAffer joined the Laphroaig distillery team in 2011, initially taking up a role covering the malt floors and the warehousing of the distillery, before becoming Assistant Manager in 2016 and then Acting Distillery Manager in late 2021. Barry worked closely with former Distillery Manager John Campbell, who held the position for 25 years until late 2021.

Maltman
Arthur has lived on Islay all his life. His uncle also worked at Laphroaig before him so he is a real member of the Laphroaig family. Arthur works on the floor malting which is a very traditional skill. Laphroaig is only one of a handful of distilleries that continue this traditional process themselves. He is married with three daughters.

Distillery Administrator
Caroline was born and brought up on Islay on a farm not far away on the “Oa”. Today much of this land is a famous bird sanctuary where you can see the giant Fish Eagles if you are lucky. Caroline has worked at the distillery since 1990 and manages the administration of the friends of Laphroaig as well as the daily tours. She can remember back in 1994 when the very first “Friends” were just hand written into a small book. Today with over 400,000 worldwide she has become very accomplished at managing the huge database of friends. But always has time to say hello to the many who pop in to see her in person.
