Tasting Notes
Colour
Vibrant yellow gold.
Nose
Sweet, stewed apples topped with crispy, slightly caramelized pastry. This is underpinned by hints of cereal, tanned leather and vanilla.
Palate
Upfront sweet and spicy notes, with notes of vanilla and sea salt intermingled with savoury notes of pork crackling with hints of freshly ground black pepper.
Finish
Long, warming finish with notes of gentle spice, charred oak, smoked mackerel and sea salt encapsulated in an oily mouthfeel.
Maturation
This single malt ages in charred ex-Bourbon barrels for ten years before being bottled at natural cask strength.

Our Original Cask Strength is the purest way to experience the taste created by the land, sea and air of Islay. Aged 10 years, it’s barrier-filtered from the cask to remove unwanted char particles – and that’s all that comes between you and the real Laphroaig.
We don’t chill-filter our Original Cask Strength, and we don’t reduce its natural strength. So, what you pour is what we draw from the barrel — the heart of charred seasoned oak barrels, our blue peat smoke and nutty barley, in a truly natural experience.
Batch 16 is our most powerful expression within the Cask Strength family, characterised by a 58.5% proof point and notes of vanilla and sea salt intermingled with hints of freshly ground black pepper and pork crackling. A dram poured neat will fill the nose with aromas of sweet apples and caramelised pastry, underpinned with a tang of cereal and tanned leather notes. The finish, a mixture of gentle spice, charred oak and smoked mackerel with an oily mouthful.

Each batch is a one-off release, with a strength and character of its own. Batch 16 brings together sweet apple and vanilla with sea salt, black pepper and charred oak smoke, reflecting the distinctive character of our scotch whiskies.

Ten years by the sea leaves its mark on every one of them, and never in the same way. Some give up more strength, others hold onto it, and a few come out sweeter than the rest. We taste them, we choose, and we bottle what we find. This one landed at 58.5%.

Many whiskies are diluted to their final bottling strength before they reach the bottle. Batch 16 is different. Ten years of maturation gave us 58.5% ABV, so that is the strength at which we bottled it: without dilution before bottling and without chill filtration. What you pour retains the natural strength and character the casks gave us.

Laphroaig Batch 16 matures in charred ex-bourbon oak, and nothing else.
The barrels arrive from America having already held bourbon once. We char them, fill them, and give them ten years. That first fill of ours draws vanilla, sweet stewed apple, and caramelised pastry out of the wood, and the char gives back the tanned leather note you find underneath. Ten years later the whisky comes out at 58.5%, and straight into the bottle it goes. No sherry cask. No second wood to soften the edges. One barrel, start to finish, is all Batch 16 has ever needed.
