An icon of our history
Bessie with L

To celebrate the spirit of International Women’s Day, get to know Bessie Williamson – an icon of our history – along with the other women making Laphroaig the distillery and whisky we all know and love today.

The first woman to own and run a Scotch whisky distillery

At Laphroaig, boldness is in our DNA. It’s passed down from those who came before us – none more so than Bessie Williamson.

The first woman to own and run a Scotch whisky distillery in the 20th century, Bessie broke barriers and built legacies. Rising from temporary secretary to dedicated owner and manager, her relentless passion helped take Laphroaig from Islay to the world.

Today, women are continuing Bessie’s legacy by forging the distillery’s path into the future.

Past and present, women have made Laphroaig what it is

Sarah Dowling

Sarah Dowling, Senior Whisky Blender at Laphroaig, is crafting the whisky for releases throughout the year. Working with the wider blending team in Springburn, she’s responsible for assessing our casks as they mature, maintaining the unforgettable and consistent character of Laphroaig releases. But she doesn’t stop there. Sarah makes sure we are continuously innovating with cask types and beyond so there’s always something special to look forward to at Laphroaig.

And no celebration of the women who’ve shaped who we are would be complete without Caroline Morris, our Distillery Administrator. She’s had a few titles over the 35 years at the distillery — Secretary, Clerkess, Administrator — she also goes by “The Mum of Laphroaig”.

Over the years, Caroline has made countless special memories and become a crucial part of the distillery’s ongoing history. By giving tours at the visitor centre, she’s met so many lovely people – and even royalty. In 1994, then HRH Prince Charles visited for the first time when Laphroaig received the Royal Warrant, and again in 2008, this time with The Duchess of Cornwall, as part of his 60th birthday celebrations. Caroline accompanied the Royal Party on their distillery tour – the perfect person to respond to any of the Duchess of Cornwall’s questions.

It isn’t only our whisky that makes us who we are – it’s our people. Few symbolise this more than Caroline Ogden, our Visitor Centre Manager. Caroline’s team makes sure there is an unforgettable experience waiting for every guest who sets foot through our doors, so they can feel the same butterflies she remembers feeling when she visited us for the very first time.

Bessie´s Legacy

Past and present, women have made Laphroaig what it is, from leading our business to ensuring the quality and innovation of our whisky and sharing our distillery with countless visitors.

This International Women’s Day, join us in raising a glass to the women who’ve shaped our spirit – and continue to do so, now and into the future.
