Restoring Islay's Peatlands
The Peat
At Laphroaig, peat is essential to the unforgettable taste we have been famous for since 1815. The unique vegetation of our island home gives our whisky its bold smoky aroma and flavour.
When making Laphroaig, there is no alternative to peat. The taste and quality in every drop of our spirit depends on it. To protect our whisky’s smoky character, it's essential that we protect our island’s peatlands.
PEATLAND WATER SANCTUARY™
Since 2021 we've been on a mission to restore and replenish Islay’s peatlands. Putting back what we take out.
The award-winning Peatland Water Sanctuary™ project on Islay has seen significant restoration already at Glenmachrie-Grianan and The Oa, a stunning coastal area owned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Laphroaig Has played a leading role in the restoration to date - typical of our bold character.
An Uncompromising Commitment
Our commitment to more sustainable practices has not gone unnoticed. In 2024, HRH King Charles renewed the Royal Warrant for Laphroaig thanks to our commitment to people, policies, and environmental progress.
Our uncompromising commitment to the future will see us managing the impact of our whisky making, ensuring our unforgettable taste can be enjoyed sustainably by the next generation of bold characters and friends alike.
