It's triple-matured, spending time in ex-Bourbon barrels after distillation to add notes of toasty vanilla. Next, it's placed in small quarter casks which lend a velvety smooth texture to the liquid.
Finally, the mature spirit is finished in ex-PX sherry butts where it takes on flavors of sultanas, raisins and sweet licorice. This complements the signature Laphroaig taste — smoky peat reek with a medicinal edge. This is the first Laphroaig single malt to be finished in PX casks, and has impressed numerous critics.
It's taken home the coveted Double Gold at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Awards. Drink neat, or add a splash of water to bring out flavors of marzipan and ripe fruit.

This Laphroaig single malt Scotch whisky is finished in Pedro Ximinez (PX) barrels for a touch of sherry sweetness. Aged first in ex-Bourbon barrels and traditional quarter casks, it has a complex flavor profile.
The signature medicinal and smoky flavor of Laphroaig is softened by notes of raisins and sultanas with a touch of sweet licorice. Serve it neat or add a splash of cold water to bring out nutty marzipan aromas. This Laphroaig expression is an ideal choice for fans of sherry-finished whiskies, or anyone looking for something special.
Laphroaig PX begins life the way all of our Laphroaig Scotch whiskies do — on the traditional malting floor in our Islay distillery. Malted barley is gently dried over a peat-fuelled fire, which imparts a distinctive smoky ""reek"" which peated whisky is known for. Once distilled, the spirit is poured into American oak ex-Bourbon barrels where the aging process begins.
Next, it's moved into 19th Century-style quarter casks. These smaller containers allow more contact with the oak, smoothing out the whisky as it matures and lending some woody notes. When it's almost ready, it's moved into larger PX barrels. These are crafted from European oak, and were previously filled with rich, sweet and unctuous Pedro Ximinez sherry. This is the first Laphroaig to be finished in such barrels.
By combining time-honored methods with new innovations, our master distillers draw upon more than two centuries of tradition to craft our exceptional Islay Scotch. This dedication has paid off — Laphroaig PX Cask has won multiple awards including the coveted Double Gold at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Awards.
